Social is getting old; Facebook, Twitter and G+ attract baby-boomers

According to the GlobalWebIndex between Q2 2012 and Q1 2013 Twitter’s fastest growing age demographic was 55 to 64 year olds, registering an increase in active users of 79%.

Both Facebook’s and Google+’s fastest growing age demographic was 45 to 54 year olds, growing by 46% and 56% respectively.

The other driving force behind the popularity of the big three is mobile. Since Q1 2011, the number of people which access the internet via a mobile phone has increased by 60.3%.

The good news for G+ is that the percentage of active users independent of age is rising. A 100% rise in posts and 75% in photos means these new people are actively contributing content. A key to survival for the content-centered G+-.

More posts means more results in search which will attract new users for G+. Now the question is who is seeing the growth in the younger demographics. Is Pinterest the new social? #SocMed

Doing it old school in the new school!

  2. Arnav Kalra says:

+Max Huijgen your question is interesting. I'm 16, I love g+ but I don't really know the haunts of other teens. There are a few of them here and they mostly reshare posts. Apparently tumblr has a lot of teens.

  3. G+ is where to be Facebook ain't exclusive no more.

  4. Ted Dumbauld says:

My youngest (6th grade) is on Instagram and nothing else. My teenagers seem to very rarely use FB anymore – Instagram for them also.

  5. Alan Sim says:

In Malaysia, G+ is still a stranger to the society, people are more concentrated on FB, gotta promote G+ here

  6. Nav H. says:

    You mean attract forced users?

  7. Nesquick 17 says:

    What about instagram

  8. Just started g+ a couple of months ago. I like it much better than FB.

  9. Norman M. says:

    Thanks for the facts.

  10. Deacon 46 says:

I don't know about that. I am a mid 60's baby boomer and I don't do Face Book or Twitter & very little G+. Also none of my mid 60 friends do Face Book Or Twitter. We've been around long enough realize that these social sites are a foolish waste of time. We would rather be fishin !!!!

  11. Deacon 46 says:

I just said it is a foolish waste of time. Pay attention, ah say pay attention there boy.

  12. Is that why I'm losing the hang of computers? Have too many older people gained control and now the interfaces only make sense to them? The mainstream web is too much of a hassle and everyone's too touchy and serious. The other parts are full of mostly messed up kids who are either painfully stupid or too smart for their own good. I don't want to be online interacting with underagers and get in trouble. The kids don't want to be caught by the overagers and get in trouble for all the messed up stuff that kids always do. What happened to the Internet where we just used a bunch of different pseudonyms and were content to talk to any strangers we happened to relate to and keep it on the network without getting too into who's who? When I was a disruptive 13 year old messing up forums, the forums were all full of adults who promptly set me straight and taught me not to be a dick. Now it's like everybody gave up on everybody else and we're all just trying to shield ourselves from all these nasty people who might be lurking on the Internet. New dimensions, same old problems.

  13. Ted Dumbauld says:

+Darrell Crosby I think your friends are t on Face Book because they are looking for the wrong site. It's actually The Face Book.

  14. I'm on most of the so called top ten sites and I prefer G+. It's easy to understand, you don't get lost in the shuffle and you can actually hold a decent conversation here.

  15. Deacon 46 says:

Ted, who actually cares? Remember I said it is a foolish waste of time. WE DON"T CARE! There are too many more important things in life that needs our attention, such as refilling the bird feeder when it gets low and sitting in the driveway so we can see what the neighbors are doing & oh yes and going to Walmart. Now there's a worthwhile past time event. Wish I had a job there as a greeter, all the young people are jealous of that because that's all they talk about. Excuse me, I drank some prune juice this morning, I gotta go.

  16. I'm only 18 and still don't have face book. Heck I've had gmail for four years and just barely started using g+. Honest it's cool to learn new things and meet people but it's not a necessity. Hope g+ gets more people !

  17. +Gage Hamilton I heard in the news last week that millions of people are leaving Facebook. I know one or two people that left Facebook for G+. Don't worry, you're in good company (or will be shortly). <rant>I'm 16 and have no intention of touching Facebook. I have loyalty to Google.</rant>

  18. For what it's worth, tumblr is overlooked to the detriment of any who overlook it; at least in terms of its demographic and engagement reach go.

  19. Interesting. Actually prefer g+

  20. Wow, G+ is really doing that well?
Pretty impressive, I wonder how many of these users are really "Active" though, perhaps google are including day to day Gmail as active stats..

  21. James Grigg says:

I expect the G+ collumn to rise

  22. Man always want 2 be a women's first luv_women like 2 be aman's lost remance

  23. Wai Lun Lee says:

Facebook desktop from its inception still makes it difficult to upload photos, crashes aplenty if anyone tries. Beggars belief.

  24. +Nathan Highton there are separate stats that include these users. The 343m are only those that actually use g+. As far as I remember this doesn't even include those that only +1 websites.

  25. Gonçalo F. says:

    Good to know 😉

  26. xiuqu yin says:

    小孩子本来就跟网络接触少,孩子们感兴趣的网上内容,依赖成人去为他们制作。

  27. Ever thought that in their age perhaps these famed social sites weren't there

  28. John Owino says:

G+ adds momentum to the society.

  29. Johann Blake says:

Google+ will never come close to the user base of Facebook. Also, those numbers are totally fabricated. If you want a real comparison, just visit any major website like CNN and compare the number of Likes to +1s. Facebook beats it almost 100 to 1 on every site. But hey, keep believing stuff people post on the Internet.

  30. Joseph Nave says:

    +Johann Blake …says you… on the internet.

    Hypocrite much?

  31. J Roque says:

I believe that's just showing percentage of change, also known to our friendly Marketing departments as "growth". If G+ has 1 post today and 2 posts tomorrow, that's marked as a "+100% growth" on that chart. Keep that in mind next time you hear "fastest growing" anything.

  32. Joseph Nave says:

…you do know that pc means personal computer, and not windows, right?

  33. Alex S says:

It's called the "Late Majority" in the product adoption life cycle for a reason… 🙂

  34. Jo Dunaway says:

G+, not surprisingly leads by quite a margin in Photos and Brand. I'm one of the early adopters, too, and noticed from the start that photographers, both professional and amateur fell in love with G+ early on and have grabbed hold of the opportunities here better than nearly any other profession I've found here. It'll be interesting to see how these figures change in these next few years as more people discover G+.

  35. Alex S says:

+Max Huijgen yep, it's the reshares that do it…

  36. Max Huijgen says:

Yes I know +Alex Schleber I´m tagging my last posts with the number and hash tag. Skipping my own reshares and imageless posts.

  37. For me, having been both on Twitter and Facebook, Google + is more sophisticated. Being a photographer it's nice to see other folk's photos and it seems there are more photographers on + than all the others combined. They interact completely different, too.
