Are we now done with these hyped phone introductions?

Dear bloggers, reporters and journalists: please move along, there is nothing to see. Face it: the mobile phone market matured and new phones are just as interesting as the latest Nissan model.

Yes, there was a time a new computer model was breaking news but that ended somewhere in the early nineties. Once the performance is acceptable for everyday use and 'new' means a different color option and every year an upgraded processor, smart phone introductions are just as boring.

The iPhone 5s is 40x times as fast and can in theory address more memory than you can actually buy for it. However Angry Birds will run just as well on the older model and browsing the web is the same experience as last year.

But great to hear from y'all that you can now buy a plastic version of last year's model and for more money you can avoid the Nokia Microsoft Lumia colors and get a finger print scanner as well. Good to know; no doubt just as important as that Siri gimmick we no longer talk about (or to).

No need to fill my newspaper with days of speculation about an introduction, followed by hot reporting from the Apple stage. Leave it to the specialized press to cover the exciting new color options and the exact pricing.

Do you really want to read all those stories about new phones?

*and no, this is not targeting Apple: the latest Samsung replacements were just as boring. That's what happens when a market matures. Even the brightest colors become grayish…

**This report wouldn't be complete without mentioning that you can now buy a cover for the phone as well! #Apple says The iPhone 5s Case is precisely designed to fit iPhone perfectly which is good news for people worrying it would be the wrong size.

***The 2014 Nissan Altima Sedan will be sensational. Watch this space. #Tech

    Every new thing becomes old.

  2. Very well said sir! It's like if people review new computer from HP or Dell!

  3. Gene Scalf says:

    Watching the stock tank now

  4. Try telling the Apple fanboys at the +BBC News +BBC Click Their gushing love of anything Apple, despite consumers not giving a crap any-more is frankly embarrassing.

No other product manufacturer gets this coverage, and I fail to understand how one single person (+Rory Cellan-Jones ) seems to have complete editorial control over anything tech at the BBC. It's almost as if he is on the Apple payroll.

  5. Hey everybody, let me tell you about the latest exciting computer from HP — with a critical comparison with the latest competing model from Dell! First, the HP …

  6. James Hart says:

You're so right +Max Huijgen . What a yawn…but the problem is that we wait on these announcements in the hope that maybe this one will have a truly ground breaking announcement…or maybe the next one…or the next one. We're suckers for this stuff!

  7. Julius Han says:

Tell us how you really feel. Lol.

  8. Cindy Brown says:

If it weren't for the fact that my wifi finally conked out (I suspect the water dunking had something to do with it, tho it seemed to recover from that), I'd still be using my iphone 4. It works just fine for my purposes. As it is, I've taken this opportunity to migrate to the N4 — which I will also likely use until it conks over adn we're on N136 or whatever…

  9. Angyl says:

My iPhone 4 (no longer serving as a phone) is DIRT FREAKING SLOW now and struggles with many of the newer games.
    #justsayin

  10. Eureka!
Btw, size does matter though 🙂

  11. Cindy Brown says:

My iphone4 is many things but not slow. How much diskspace is on yours?

  12. Max Huijgen says:

Could be +Angyl Bender Every new revision of iOS slows down the older models. Having said that the iPhone 4 was introduced in june 2010 and the maturing of this technology happened after that.

  13. Just came across with the idea of #Phonebloks: a phone assembled like Lego blocks with a longer lifecycle – what do you think? http://youtu.be/oDAw7vW7H0c

  14. H. Marche says:

    I agree over the "over hype"…. #boring

  15. Paul Wooding says:

It would be better if the iphone was affiliated with a confectionary. Something like Toffee Apple, that would be nice

  16. Eli Fennell says:

I still think the Moto X was pretty exciting myself, but because it transcended the iterative update model with a truly new direction for the technology to take. We'll see how long that remains a new thing though before a "smarter", more services-oriented approach becomes standard.

  17. Entering the era of incremental improvements. My laptop is 5 years old, and if it weren't for the battery and occasional hardware errors, I would not need a new one. We are getting to the point where it is the same with phones.

  18. Angyl says:

14.4 GB used, 14.1 GB available. My original Gen iPad is so slow I mend clothes while I wait for apps to load. I imagine there's some relativity, but I'll agree with max that each new IOS seems to take more overhead and nearly every app update makes my apps slower, suggesting they're tuned to newer hardware and not tested on older gear even if it is technically supported.

  19. Cindy Brown says:

Huh, OK. Mine does slow down when I have too many pics filling it up. But it speeds back up when I free the disk space up again. I have 6.1.3 on it now, so I don't know why the difference between the two.

  20. Doug Vaughn says:

Oh please the fandroids will be slobbering all over the next galaxy S iteration with its .01 inch increasein screen size and its infintesimal increase in camera resolution.

  21. Paul Wooding says:

I think the new Samsung Note 3 is pretty ground breaking for functionality and hardware, but the launch reporting was a bit muted.

I don't think Apple have done enough with this release to stem the flow away to other smartphones. They will have to rely on China sales to keep the iphone buoyant. Something (someone) seems to be missing

  22. Panah Rad says:

Wearable devices are next before we go completely bio. But yes. Too hard to get excited about smartphone launches

  23. Eli Fennell says:

+Doug Vaughn Some will, some won't. I won't. I wasn't impressed with the S4, I'd say HTC, LG, Sony, and Motorola have all made better flagships this year. That's the beauty of choice: you can decide whether you want to suffer the brand version of Stockholm Syndrome or not.

  24. Eli Fennell says:

+Paul Wooding My beef with the Note 3 is Touchwiz still manages to lag, despite one of the best processors and 3GB of RAM.

  25. Aww lame, tired of this pic…it's been a year now stop posting it!

  26. Max Huijgen says:

+Paul Wooding (and +Doug Vaughn might like this as well): the Note 3 is an improved Note 2.
If Samsung copied the business model of Apple they might sell the old note for a reduced price as both are fully functional smart phones organizers.

  27. +Michael Gomez They're okay cars but I've been into VW / Audi since before I learned to drive.

  28. This iphone 5s and 5c release has been the most unenhanced versions of the phone ive seen yet. Really Apple? Its the same damn phone! with a faster processor. Thats it! So what that it could read 64bit, what the hell donu need 64bit on a phone anyway! Its still an 8meg pix camera!!! That we use!! And to make it even worst, they try to make us look stupid, telling us that the amount of pixels dont matter, that its just about the sensor and that a bigger pixel is a better picture. Thats offensive, really. I mean, yes 95% of ppl out there dont know better and who's to blame them, but what about the 5% that have a little science knowledge? And it doesnt even take that kind of knowledge. A pixel is square, applied out of Cartesion coordinates – the bigger the pixel the more u can see the edges come on Apple! They litterally just said "lets just tell them something to cover the severe lack of camera improvement. Theyre stupid they wouldnt tell the difference anyway". How truly disappointing ur new phones are Tim!!!

  29. Most meaningless phone release yet the iphone 5s. Ridiculous. Its the same phone

  30. The phones, computers and cars are all alike… you take them off the lot and they immediately deprecate and by the following month the next big thing has come out. 🙂

  31. I agree Debra. But its just that u exoect much more oit of Apple. im sorry to saybfor Apple fans, which i happen to have been one (not anymore), bir Samsung freaking delivered. Those S4 and Galx Note 3 phones are ridiculously AWESOME. This iphone release is a real bad bad joke of a phone (improvement).

  32. Adrian McCoy says:

Iphone5s and iPhoneC are still 4inches. I have huge hands and long fingers. I can't use that! I absolutely love the galaxy series. Bigger is always better!

  33. Max Huijgen says:

I assume this post has hit what's hot seeing the comments 😉 Amusing as it hardly gets shared because real readers would hesitate to contribute to the #Apple hype of the night.

  34. spazmik says:

"The over-all point is that new technology will not necessarily replace old technology, but it will date it. By definition. Eventually, it will replace it. But it's like people who had black-and-white TVs when color came out. They eventually decided whether or not the new technology was worth the investment."
    Steve Jobs

  35. Alot can we just admit that androids are better then iphones please

  36. It's what us tech journalists love to do. It's our passion. We enjoy doing it. This post pissed me off. >:-(

  37. Ty Foreman says:

rehashing a story from another website that rehashed the information it got from a different site isn't journalism

  38. IPhone user: ANDROID MAKES CHEAP PLASTIC PHONES

    *iPhone 5C is released *

iPhone user: THE 5C IS SOOOOO COST EFFECTIVE ITS GREAT 🙂

  39. Opt out please no more emails please

  40. Charles M says:

+David McMeekin I would not classify the LG G2 and incremental update. Although I agree that for most it is , none are less incremental than the IPhone.

  41. Max Huijgen says:

The NYT has a great summary: Apple Shows 2 New iPhones, One a Lower-Cost Model
Apple aimed one of its new iPhones at emerging markets, while introducing a fancier one with a faster processor.

lol as the 5c will be $733 in China. Just a few months of salary in relatively well-paid jobs…

  42. Most over rated phone on the market.

  43. randy rivas says:

I think new phones would be a bit more exciting if they weren't released annually. If we were to see a new successor to an iPhone or a Galaxy every 2 years or so then it would be more exciting. It would also give these companies more time to think of what new technologies they could put in their new phones. Technology doesn't advance too much over the course of just a year so if you release a new phone every single year all you can ever add to it are minor updates which makes it boring. If you actually give mobile technology the time to advance then new versions of a phone would be more exciting and much more worthwhile.

It would also help if companies could get better at keeping secrets. What made the 5c/5s event so boring (besides minor updates) was the fact that everything we saw was leaked prior to the event and it took away all the mystery.

  44. Why do people buy the Ios Systems 😕 Android is better everything is free Ios you have to buy all the apps in shop

  45. You're all right. That's true and well said.
    Chapeau !

  46. Not an Apple hater at all and this is pretty powerful writing.

  47. I don't care about the phones i just don't like how i have to pay for apps

  48. Can you really blame the journalist? I mean not for anything but I blame the consumers and die hard fans of any brand. If hype is what sales then hype they shall get. This won't stop until people smarten up and stops wasting money …. but a die hard anything will never stop.

  49. Josh Seitz says:

Apple was brilliant with doing these unveilings over the years, but when they release a phone with a sub-par screen size nobody cares about the 64 bits, A7, M7, etc. I'd still prefer to watch movies or play games on my Mega 6.3!

  50. Josh Levi says:

Good rant very well put. As of today we have had several new phones announced. From LG to Sony and Samsung Apple. I have to say from what I have seen. It looks like Sony may have won this round with the Xperia Z1. It is a true beast and looks amazing. On paper it is the phone of moment. I feel it is time for a new champ. I think we are all tired of Apple and samsung hogging the market. I guess the sales numbers will show.

  51. Apple is expensive and crappy the actual product is good but the price is terrible for the product i'd rather get another equally good phone with the same things but for free

  52. You know, +Leonardo Duran I've never seen such a short sighted comment in a thread of this nature. Do a little research and you'll find an interview with Bill Gates in Rainbow Magazine, in which he was quoted as saying he couldn't see any home computer ever needing more than 128k of RAM. This was ironically the very same issue who's cover showed a great big SODIMM stick of 256k of RAM with the caption "Supercharge Your PC With 256K OF RAM!!!" – Guess which machine released with the first quarter-gig of RAM…here's a hint, it wasn't a Packard-Bell. Similarly, a 64bit is the actual and only real and genuine move forward this phone has contributed to mobile devices. Just as Bill Gates learned in 1982, a short-sighted comment like this plain laughable. You should research exactly what it is that 64bit operating methods contributed to computing platforms. Don't get stuck in 1982…

  53. Josh Seitz says:

Josh Levi If you are looking for a new champ that Xperia Z1 is nice but if not this Galaxy Mega 6.3 I would have bought thw HTC One.

  54. I think so far only the Moto X has caught my imagination this year. But it's sadly not available in my country so I might get the Galaxy Note 3 instead

  55. Like the way you describe as Nissan car.

  56. +randy rivas but then it would take Apple another year or two to catch up to what Android is doing :p IMO the fast release of new devices from all manufacturers taken together is good for innovation. Companies like LG and Samsung can be bolder and experiment with many new features to meet certain use cases and see what succeeds.

  58. Ml km no I'm l km dB DSA avid Bowie

  59. Lol +Justin Goldsmith , obviously then, uve seen a pretty damn limited amount of comments if u think mine is the most shortsighted, which doesnt say much of ur credibility. Anyway, ur comparison of computer RAM and coputer history is as silly as ur criticism. Bill gates and Microsoft my friend, happen to have been in the COMPUTER business. Computers, do u understand the difference? RAM memory, hard drive memory, including 64bit reading, IS for computers and computer history, very important. But for phones? And I wont even say that its not important for phones, but when u have a new phone release with the amount of pressure as apple has had to deliver significant improvement, u would hope that they would have focused a bit more on things that we use on phones, like FEATURES maybe? like the camera maybe? Tell me, very insightful sir, what practical use does 64bit bring to the use of a phone?? Dies it make too much a difference with 32bit?? Ill answer this latter one: NO, makes no difference. U can answer the 1st one, or u can try, rather. And sure, dint get me wrong, its good that they brought the 64bit thing to the phone, but overall, the iphone5s release does NOT meet any expectations with exception of yours obviously

  60. Sorry to break to you +Justin Goldsmith , but ur beloved Apple, and without trying to hide it mine as well, has fallen way behind in the game. Their phones are a joke compared to Samsung's. And they dont even show signs of getting out of that slump. The Galaxy S4 and the Gal Note 3 are wayyy too ahead of iphone. They really are awesome gadgets. And samsung has bendable and foldable phones in their near future, and cameras of 32 meg pixels, and wrisy watches far ahead of what apple is promising (yes im into the inside scoop thing). So, sorry ro bursr ur bubble sir, but iphone has nothing to offer but small insignificant improvements.

  61. Samuel Smith says:

I love my Nexus, but wish it had Siri. Is she faster, or any more accurate? No. But she does have an attitude. (I like that.)
The next big thing IMHO will be AI, of various flavours.

  62. +Leonardo Duran I had always ended up with a Samsumg without even noticing. My son got me the IPhone 4. This time I purposely went with an LG. (something different) I had a HTC for a week and took it back before I got the LG Optimus. So far, so good. I have a few friends with Samsumg 2 and I think the other has a 4 but I wasn't impressed. Talli with her 4S wasn't impressed either.

  63. +Grant Mitchell they finally are able to insure them through the contracts now too. When I had my IPhone 4 I had to get it insured somewhere else.

  64. +Leonardo Duran my beloved Apple? Lol here again your shortsightedness has made a fool of you. I'm posting this from an Xperia Z. I'm an android supporter through and through. Since you are blinded by your biased ranting I'll say it in a simpler way…you said "…what the hell donu need 64bit on a phone anyway! It's still an 8meg pix camera!!!" I said (in so many words), you're an idiot and you don't know what you're talking about. 99% of everything you've said here reads like a slapstick comedy film with a sad ending. I could have just as well addressed your asenine rant about "the amount of pixels" but I chose to leave it alone for the sake of your dignity. I admire your passion, but seriously, you've got a few things to learn about technology (specifically computer architecture) before unleashing ridiculous rants that pollute more than they contribute. I can suggest a few good books if you'd like 🙂

  65. tris mac says:

Buying the same dam phone is like buying water you feel stupid some kind of way

  66. Ed Wahl says:

Does this mean we've finally come over the peak of the hype cycle on stupid, er.. smart phones? Thank goodness.

  67. +Justin Goldsmith lmao! Your obviously pissed off cuz u cudnt either challenge what I had previously said or defend ur previous argument. So now u lean on empty statements that dont make any sense really lol. And apparently YOUR dignity depends heavily on these comments, for which case I deeply apologize for having splattered it. Sorry buddy, but I dont quite care for ur senseless suggestions. My dignity has nothin to do with this lol. Its a damn phone, and these are stupid blogs. I have much greater things in which my dignity rests on lol. U have kids man, come on, your dignity really should NOT ride so heavily on threads in a blog. Specially not about stupid phones

  68. And everything ur saying by the way, hasnt contributed AT ALL to Apple's defence… (just thought I might make u aware of that in case u ever thought about debating it elsewhere….get better at it 🙂 )

  69. Alright +Leonardo Duran here it is, I'm not trying to defend Apple. nor am I upset or angry, I was simply relating to you that you sound like and idiot because everything you've said is completely wrong and unfortunately it looks like there's at least one person who believes your pointless rambling. The overall point here was that stupid is a disease and I hate watching people spread it. I don't want to defend Apple, I want to watch there stock go the way of your completely inaccurate and shortsighted arguments. But I fear I've stepped in troll shit… lesson learned today: never feed the trolls.

  70. This is an argument that has already been had. OSX vs Windows. OSX offers a more "stable" environment….but you have to pay future prices for last years hardware. Windows offers cutting edge hardware that can work with ALL hardware….if you want to "Make it work". And it costs about 60% the cost of an Apple setup.

    Flash Forward.
Android is the same deal. Pay twice as much (at least) for an IOS product….and only use it the way 'THEY' will let you. Or venture out in the wild for the Android product that suits you…….and most of the time…..if you don't like your crappy (2 yr old) Android experience….You can choose your own!

Eventually the income model will win out for Google. The more people that use their handsets the more money they make. Apple is stuck to making money on Hardware. You can point at iTunes….but as time goes on…people will realize they can get MORE for FREE in the Android marketplace.

  71. I believe, u stepped on shit u couldn't handle my friend. And its obvious that ur pride and dignity is injured, in which case I have no intention of adding salt to that wound. But if ur gonna start a "fight" in a meaningless blog and invest that much energy and dignity in it, then my goodness +Justin Goldsmith , know atleast what ur saying and make sure atleast that u make sense, and at the very least, defend ur argument. Uve come outta the blue barking about my shortsightedness without saying a single thing why, with exception of my very made point of the insignificance of 64bit in phones, that u disagree on. Uve said NOTHING to ur defense. You have however, mumbled quite well and quite a bit. So yes sir, I agree with u. It should be a lesson well learned. Dont step in shit u cant handle. Learn to debate things better. Choose ur fights. Lesson well learned for u indeed

  72. ^ this guy doesn't get it. you pay more for apple because the software lasts longer, is more secure, has real people for support etc… its the same reason people buy european cars, any car goes from a-b, but those little extra luxuries and attention to detail is the reason why people spend the money.

  73. The Patman says:

I think I can live with my nexus 4 for the next 5 years!

  74. Unfortunately, the Windows Phone hardware isn't cutting-edge. Hopefully, it will be at some point.

  75. Haha. +Leonardo Duran it's sad how keyboard warriors like yourself expend so much testosterone like this. Anyway, look, I'm done man. I didn't want to fight, argue, or debate from the get go, I wanted to share a little knowledge but it's obvious you have no appetite for knowledge, only dick measuring in a forum. I added you to my following circle so hit me up when you actually understand what I originally said about your comment. I'll be.more than happy to engage in an intellectual discussion, however, I'm sorry but I don't do the dick measuring thing. Later, man.

  76. Blakk Billi says:

That's exactly what's going to happen, still good with my 4s

  77. No need to read a review, just know that your iphone will die, the battery will become ridiculously hopeless at holding charge, etc. Why not buy a phone with the old fashioned feature of having a removeable battery cover?

  78. AR FACTS says:

    I hate like this phone

  79. LOL that's so… Now if apple or Samsung can figure out a way to make batteries last longer, that would be interesting to hear about!!

  80. For me the next major iteration of a smartphone should be a content creator, rather than a content curator. That will be the day I can finally ditch my laptop and separate cameras, and then a major product launch would be justified. Incremental improvements don't really make me swoon.

  90. oh man I can't wait to have one!

  91. Iphone is just like an expensive car(bugati, audi, lambor) you buy to show off to the neighbours but really can't drive & galaxies are like the neighbours car a (mark x Toyota) she has no problem driving it anywhere and it always gets there.
Iphone is so hyped up yet it has huge flaws ,you need to buy staff you can't exchange music or photos via Bluetooth with other phone models, their upgrades are really not upgrades just names.
What a hoax. I like the shape though ,looks like an imported cookie.

  92. Yep it's getn old guys if there's a breakthrough in technology chances are mainstream wont notice it as they just delete these types of blogs you're to blame guys too much hype not always the best line of attack , to the corporate piranhas !!!

  93. As for apple knockers I was one until Mac book pro ! They rebuilt ground up people it's the future ps I am now an apple app developer ONLY APPLE !! These guys are pretty awesome if Samsung joined forces they would monopolize the entire industry !!

  94. For people who make stuff for IOS only eat Worms cause Android is Number 1 there money there You can have your iOS and Android and make more money I would have my App on Android First

  97. +Max Huijgen check out the new Corolla! Nice wheels 😛

  98. John Ray says:

The "problem" with Apple, is that they've patented and protected the iPhone so much in the past they can't change the design without other companies taking the Apple stance and suing! It's a shame.

  99. I'm a little disappointed too… The changes are too incremental but I need a new phone so I will be getting it as I'm not happy with the s4. I've found it to buggy, laggy and it constantly turns itself on and off for no reason. Calls are terrible to on my s4. I tried to defect but I'm an apple fan! That said though I don't see the 5s or 5c holding up to the competition and Apple have widen the gap, with them lagging behind!!!

  100. naahhh.. dont lie.. u dont own a s4. once u call urself apple fan. u wudnt have the courage to try others. u just read the bad reviews. thats wat u do

  101. Feth O'ril says:

Other breaking news. …. A person in the same room can be contacted by a thing called speaking…. Strange but true, it appears a large portion of people are able to do this but it seems is a latent skill.
Vowel usage has been discovered to be a latent skill that humanoids have. Scientist's and public are shocked by these discoveries.

  104. Marcus Lim says:

agreed. so hard to get excited over the same shape and design

  105. Paul Wooding says:

This is the problem with annual release cycles. It means that manufacturers are forced to release a new model by a certain date, and not when there is something actually new to bring to market

  106. Fuck, your negativity almost rubbed off on me..

  107. +Debra Masters that's one thing I couldn't knock apple for is the apple care it is easier & cheaper to pay 99 up front that 8-10 over 20-24 months

  108. +Doug Vaughn oh please. The apple lovers do the same thing. That's what we do if we really like something. The iPhone looks stunning. I like my galaxy S's and Notes right now though.

  109. Will #Guy Kawasaki Save Apple? Why is he with Microsoft any way what the Plus lol..

  110. Darren wall says:

I'll unashamedly admit that I'm one of the "specialized press" +Max Huijgen mentions in the excellent piece above. While I'm not feeling the need to defend myself or others, I do feel the need to point out that not all reviewers are on Apples payroll. Some of us provide accurate and easy to understand information, which is unbiased plus designed to inform the consumer, prior to purchasing.

  111. Copa setic says:

This post is accurate. Technology/innovation in the communication arena has plateaued for sure. So we're conned by gimmicks and lazy code requiring faster, bigger and inefficient designs. There's actually nothing new.

  112. maila Craig says:

Te "mighty iphone" has fallen, I guess steve Jobs sank qith the "I-spirit"

  113. Darren wall says:

+Amp Man I agree innovation to a certain extent has plateaued and that's why we're seeing this new wave of advanced accessories such wireless camera lenses and smartwatches.

  114. It's the people queuing up for ten days before its even in the shops is what worries me…

  115. What d ?

    Sent from James M Wilson

  116. I think ape is lacking in innovation only n oly because of steve's absence.. I feel Tim Cook will drown in the ocean of Android with apple soon. It was not apple guy's it was all steve…

  117. Apple is exp ..no removabke battry ..nt even user friendly no multitasking no blue tooth wifi direct or nfs ..shit brick…m good eith s3 runs smooth 32gb nvr asked for more ..does more than apple

  118. binu vasu says:

It's not about how a product can enrich your life, but it's about what it has and has not. This is the new age "Gadgetism" as I call it. The real "fan boys" associate themselves to a product or manufacturer. They argue over the extra 3 pixel one has. And they think by having 100hz. of extra clock speed can enrich their life every year. It's a pity that the new genetic cancer treatment methods and lab grown beating heart (stem cell tech.) couldn't grab this much attention. The new generation are the victims of clever marketing.

  119. MAXIMO MAX says:

"Cheaper" iphone 5c! Well all other phone companies have seen selling their cheap plastic phones to you suckers for the same price as the iphone.

  120. Darren wall says:

    +binu vasu
Thats an excellent point "It's a pity that the new genetic cancer treatment methods and lab grown beating heart (stem cell tech.) couldn't grab this much attention. The new generation are the victims of clever marketing."

Well said, I too wish blind consumerism was a thing of the past, however its the society we live in that has allowed it to flourish!

  121. Al Sulaiti says:

  124. Jim Morvay says:

Thank you Sir for making the statements that many are afraid to state. I own a dumbphone and am proud of it because it does exactly what I wanted it to do in the first place: make phone calls.

  125. Phone calls?? – Oh yeah, I remember those.

  126. +Grant Mitchell. IPhone 5c cost about the same as Android Flagship phones #justsaying

  129. Ed Custard says:

I upgrade my phone every six to eight years whether it needs it or not. My GNex isn't due for replacement for quite a while.

  130. New iphone so much faster that I got slimmer by doing workout.

  131. I'm actually mildly interested in the new Note, but still agree. We've come to the point where everything is incremental

  132. Leo Carlos says:

What an enjoyably refreshing review. Liked very much!

  133. there's a new iPhone? (yawn) What color is it and can I go back to the future with it? (yawn)
    Great Post +Max Huijgen

  134. Well, you begin to realize that the tech press has to hype, gush, and spread rumors because they're in bed with manufacturers. And manufacturers have to do it because it's good for business.

It hit me when I saw a blogger gushing about an Android product (and I love Android) that didn't really deserve the praise. Or the sensational reviews on these new Apple products that are basically boring upgrades and marketing gimmicks. I thought: these are the same fools that once told us the Palm Pre and Blackberry were oh so cool!

So sadly, no, we're not done.

  135. Darren wall says:

+Leibo R Raibstein not all the "Tech press" are in it to cause hype, many that I know including myself are trying to inform consumers about their choices.

  136. "Are we done with these hyped phone introductions?" Answer: No. Rhetorical question.

  137. Rizwan Azad says:

"which is good news for people worrying it would be the wrong size". Loved this line.

  138. I had my HTC evo3d for 2 years. Wonderful phone, never let me down, decent camera, ran smoothly. The only reason I upgraded to the HTC one was because the battery in the evo3d packed it in. Since I was out of contract I thought I'd upgrade. The difference between the two phones is minimal. The biggest difference is the camera, that's one thing that has improved greatly on smartphones over the last 2 years…. But other than that, words with friends and Facebook work the same on both!

  139. Finger print scanner was first introduced in Motorola atrix the first dual core phone. Why didn't they patented the innovation. Now apple is going to loot consumers with new marketing strategy like first finger print scanner phone out there.

  140. Jerry Ellis says:

ha – loved this post! Very well said, +Max Huijgen.

  141. Lloyd Canada says:

The apple hate is becoming stupid. Who cares.
    Sent from a galaxy s4

  142. God, this post is awesome..

  143. I agree with this post. Nothing has really blown my mind this year. The galaxy S4 came close with hover mode using the finger and air gesture, but it wasnt mind blowing stuff. I hope someone changes the game soon

  144. Alain F.iev. says:

Great post. These journalists need to overhype iphones for some reason.

The very same things they attack android devices BlackBerry and wp8 devices for they act like apple invented them when apple uses them. For example check out +The Verge live after Apple's announcement.

They were practically slobering over the iPhone not one critical statement made.

+TechCrunch went so far as to say Apple made plastic feel fantastic…after destroy Samsung devices hell any device that used plastic.

Apple put last years iPhone 5 in colorful shells is charging the same as a top end phone and these journalists are hyping it like a new invention.

Its pathetic. Apple must pay for create reports.

  145. The +Android army just won the mobile phone wars

  146. boisean G says:

    iPhones 4" screen really sucks…
    Go for galaxy!!!

  147. +Ahmad Shehadeh I definitely agree with the battery thing. lol

  148. Al Weal says:

    I got an s3 and can't flash 10.2, +Robert Bullians , how'd you get that to work? I have the d2spr.

  149. James Woo says:

+Max Huijgen i'm slightly hurt when you compare Apple's product with Nissan, only slightly. Nissan has the GTR aka Godzilla with is Not, I repeat, Not a square block with a screen. YMMV whether the GTR is your cup of tea or not 🙂

  150. boisean G says:

    I'll wait for iphone 6.
Perhaps dumb Apple will realize that we need a bigger screen.

  151. Can we also put an end to bloggers doing an unboxing video?

  152. Max Huijgen says:

+James Woo I was careful not to pick on the GTR 😉

  153. Mike Hawkins says:

Let them. They can send the link to their mother. Anybody remember 1975 when there was a whole host of stores selling nothing but interesting expensive calculators? We will move on soon enough.

  154. Wow! It's like you read my mind

  155. Best summary of this I have ever read….

  156. Cat Walters says:

    Haha!!! Well said, Bravo!!!

  157. Rama Drama says:

I am afraid we are reaching the technology maturity era. For those who have more than 5 digital devices that they use currently, don't think any upgrades in them will entice them to spend more money, unless they got lots of them 🙂 Great post +Max Huijgen !

  158. Don Felipe says:

+Mark Gillespie you're forgetting +The Verge and +CNET that are spoon fed by the Californian giant 😛

  159. +Cindy Brown I love your technical term jargon, 'conked out' 🙂

  160. IPhone is and always be the Best, whether you are in those united States or across the pond. 64bit? True innovation, leaps and bounds way ahead of everything else out there. Consumers should be excited and salivating over what the best company will do next! If only Apple could make everything in life: car, house, clothes, fingernail clippers. Those products would be on top too! Get. With. It.

  161. +Jonathan Brock no truly android flagship has ever come out of the gates as $99 most come out ass $199, $249 or $299 but since manufacturers release android phones left & right they lose value a lot faster just like the HTC One started at 200 but now its already down at some places to 100 for upgrades or new customers…. I just don't like the hipocrisy (spell check) of people who are fans of Apple that always complained about android making plastic phones but now since android has 80% of global market share Apple releases a plastic phone and its branded as "cost effective" so everybody can afford one….WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK GOOGLE WAS DOING THIS WHOLE TIME all they wanted to do was make smartphones AFFORDABLE it just took apple 7 years to catch on lol

  162. The hype is not as strong as it used, because there is no Steve Jobs anymore, so Apple has become a "Mee too" Company.

Still, there is a lot of money invested in Apple and most of this bloggers are connected to Apple one way or the other. They have a need to push the apple stock price somehow. Problem for them, this is the age of context, and the devices that are at the edge oft his new age are the ones with Google's mobile operating system.

  163. Dude. The Nissan GTR is one of the hottest cars to hit the streets in the last few years. And they come in multiple colors.

  164. +Leonardo Duran lol! Its still early but the quote of the day so far goes to Leonardo, "And apparently YOUR dignity depends heavily on these comments, for which case I deeply apologize for having splattered it." Lol!

  165. iPhone hasn't been the best for some time. They have been failing at playing catching up for a few years now. Android rules the marketplace, and for good reason.

  166. +Gabriel Vasile, obviously the folks in here cannot afford an iPhone. That's why they came out with the more affordable plastic model. I love my iPhone and recently did a switch to the Android phones and within 24 hours I'm back on the iPhone. The iPhone without a doubt is the best and smartest smart phone on the market today. You get what you pay for.

  167. Paul Dube says:

I think it is Gr8 that Apple innovated so much and put a fingerprint scanner in it! That shows they're catching up! Android had it (Atrix 4G) 2.5 years ago. But hey, it is another Apple Innovation!

  168. +James Hamilton I am writing this from an unlocked, no carrier attached Galaxy S4 paid in full price. I think you are quite wrong.

  169. Johnny B says:

The smartphone market as far as features is concerned has reached it's peak. Not much innovation out there other than maybe better screens and processors in the near future. Unless a manufacturer comes out with a phone that projects holograms, then I think we'll be getting the same old stuff.

  170. My current phone is Accually just as fast as the laptop im working on daily.

  171. +Gabriel Vasile 64bit innovation? except android supported 64bit procs back in Version 2.3 with gingerbread even when the hw didnt exist.

  172. +Carlos Zorrilla, have you ever owned an iPhone?

  173. dipti jigar says:

I have iPhone 5 and Samsung S4 let me tell you the reality is Samsung is so fast and easier than iPhone 5.

  174. binu vasu says:

Those who hated plastics(galaxy range) are now singing praises of plastic (iPhone 5c). Last year the same thing was in a metal casing called iPhone 4s

  175. +James Hamilton are you freaking retarded? you think $600 for a phone is "cheap/affordable" get real, a $200 nexus has twice the usability the 5c has

    http://store.apple.com/ca/buy-iphone/iphone5c

the S4 destroys the iphone in "smartness", the POS iphone doesnt even have NFC, the tech is like 4 years behind.

  176. Max Huijgen says:

Everything goes in this thread but 'retarded' and other personal attacks is not what we want to see +Emmanuel Chang

  177. Good message well said etc etc

  178. Kris Mielitz says:

I swear this is how the IPhone is turning into >:(

  179. Walter Las says:

In a way, I blame the Internet and nearly immediate accessibility to information. Back in the days of yore, your best bet for getting information came from magazines, and they generally had a month (or more) of lead time. By the time you found out about something it was either already on the shelves or not long in coming.

Now, though, we know about products when they're in the planning stage and we feel like we're starved for information and product. We eat up everything we can about the things we're interested in until we're desensitized to it. Similar to the way that some people really looked forward to Christmas after Thanksgiving, when catalogs and displays started showing up. Now, Christmas is advertised in July so by the time it gets here, who cares?

The rapid development of products coupled with the constant stream of information has made us all start looking for the "next big thing" and we end up disappointed when it turns out to be the same product with a new layer of makeup.

I think of my great-grandfather: he was born in the late 1800s. During his lifetime he had seen the rise of the car, the airplane, electricity, telephones, television, computers, and more. He had genuinely new experiences with things. Most of us, on the other hand, have always grown up and grown through the same products with slightly different characteristics. The start of the home computer products was probably the only real "revolution" we've seen when it comes to gadgets.

So, yeah, a smart phone is a smart phone. Not much different than it was before but, really, how much different can it be?

  180. +James Hamilton , yes a 3GS. I gave my daugther an ipod touch, and have given tech support to Apple products in the past. So what are you trying to say?

  181. So we are all agreed it's a piece of shit

  182. +Mojo Jojo , a huge step…for the Apple babies.

  183. Len B says:

Nope….these devices are like candy. They keep feeding the reward centers of the brain and people will buy them just to be "cool"

  184. +Emmanuel Chang, No I'm highly educated with two doctorates. You get what you pay for (fact). I deal in facts. If you want to deal in affordability that's fine. But expect mediocrity. I understand that not everyone can afford an iPhone, but isn't that the reason they came out with the plastic version? I can't afford a Ferrari but it doesn't stop me from saving to buy one. Don't call people names. That makes you small, insignificant and adds to the ugliness of this world. What this world needs is good people. Be one.

  185. +Carlos Zorrilla, I meant nothing derogatory by what I said. I was just wondering if you actually used an iPhone. I don't attack folks online. Peace!! 🙂

  186. +James Bridges, I agree with you whole heartedly.

  187. I would totally buy the really big iPhone on the right if it were real. It's so… LONG!

No, I'm not compensating for anything. Why do you ask?

  188. +James Hamilton Peace then! 🙂

Now to +Mojo Jojo Yes, and OSX too. Yes, my computers run Windows and Ubuntu on 64bit. Now I ask you, monkey with sub-par brain, do you know what mobile, a real time and general purpose operating systems are? Do you know that their inner workings and behaviors are different?

In otder for Apple to run ios7 fully and smoothly and make people spend money in the new iphone 5S they had to do that, now compare a real multitasking mobile OS that has been running on a 32 bit platform. Do you get the picture?

  189. Welcome to reality my friend.

  190. Cleber Silva says:

O Google e ótimo gostei muito!!!

  191. These are gonna be the new models

  192. David Eaton says:

Very balanced, non judgemental post. Well said sir.

  193. +Mojo Jojo Android has been 64bit capable since Gingerbread in 2010 so no, its not the first.

the fingerprint scanner is nothing new, the motorola atrix had that 2 years ago and nobody used it, it doesnt make the phone easier or faster to use, its more or less useless.

the S4 has more features than the iphone ever will, notice how some iphones have navigation with apple maps and some dont? even though they are all on 6.1.3, i can tell you even gingerbread phones have the latest google maps with full nav. in fact, every 2.3+ phone has the latest of all google apps where no iphone 4 will ever have the latest apple maps.

the iphone being 64bit is a joke, it doesnt have more than 4GB of ram (which is the true strength of 64bit computing), also since it has less than 4GB but longer instruction code it actually runs shittier than if the OS code was all 32 bit

  194. thnx hav u got a youtube account

  195. +James Hamilton actually you do not get what you pay for, only someone that has no clue about specifications and what they actually mean will say that.

for example, macbooks, they cost twice the price of a high end windows laptop, they have no option for fast CPUs (intel Core i7 extreme), they have no option for high end ram (1866MHz heatsinked), no high end network card (killer networks, macs dont even support 9 or 15K jumobframes, they are using bottom of the barrel components), no high end video cards, the video card in the macbook pro retina is a freaking joke, its less the mid grade with only 1GB of ram where as the competitors all have faster GPUs and more video ram (3-4GB),

also Macs are slower in games, they are slower with USB file transfers, they dont even have Wireless AC, they are garbage for $3K.

as for reliability, you think that its the best quality? they dont even give you more than a 1yr by default where as Asus gives a 2yr with 1yr accidental, hp elitebooks and dell latitude is 3years support and if needed they even have 4hr onsite support, what does apple have? 90 phone support? lol what a joke

Asus Tosh & Sony are top in quality, apple comes in the middle with dell
    http://bitsonline.org/news/111-asus-leads-in-laptop-reliability-beats-all-other-competitors-

  196. Ed Ordoñez says:

iPhone 10 will attempt to be revolutionary haha

  197. mamad zar says:

در اين دنياي بي حاصل چرا مغرور ميگردي سليمان گر شوي آخر نصيب مور ميگردي…

  198. Ghost Bradd says:

Well said +Max Huijgen … there is nothing "new" to these. same old thing in a new package.

  199. I dont use apple so never cared for a glorified phone that they are

  200. +Mojo Jojo whats the point? right now if it was 64bit, it would give NO ADVANTAGE, the A7 is a gutless cpu, so no, android manufactures wouldn't use it. do you even know why 64bit computing is necessary in desktops?

games dont even take advantage of 64bit and they are some of the most demanding software titles ever written, most other software cant use max cpu, ram, video and ssd all at the same time

  201. Dan Marsh says:

+James Hart you said it! It is like we are expecting the phone to beat all phones and we get a suped up old phone.
In reality, we have so many products to choose from each with the same features and different features from each other… Does it really matter who has the best one? Does the phone in your hand have the features you need and use on a daily basis? Would I get a iPhone? No. It does not have what I need to make it through the week… BUT, my friend uses his iPhone to the maximum because the features it has that he needs.

  202. Simon Price says:

Your sick of them I love them… I work full time and have 3 children.. It's the only thing I got to look forward to

  203. Very well said boss…. now no excitement of smart phones left as such..

  204. +Emmanuel Chang , you expanded the view of what I meant and that person still does not get it.

What could you expect from someone that has the name and avatar of one of lousiest cartoon characters in animation history?

  205. There is no hype about the latest and greatest cars +Max Huijgen because most poeple can not afford new models. The average person buys used vehicles and computers are slowly being replaced by smartphones and tablets. Poeple talk so much about new phones because the smartphone is fairly new and most poeple can affrod the newest models. Why talk about a new car you cant affrod or a computer that is becoming obsolete.

  206. Fuck can any one help Iv got the HTC 1 but Iv no laptop and have followed the shit 4 takeing pics fa online and puting them on g+ but it never feckn works and the buffering time is sooooooo fuckn long and allways stops and starts when watching porn it's a piss take

  207. Zachary Bell says:

+bill webber that already exists, as do high-speed peterbilts and KWs.

  208. Alex Garcia says:

Bullshit…. Bla bla bla. What a bullshit article.

  209. Max Huijgen says:

Thanks for the intelligent commentary +Alex Garcia Good that you took the time to leave a response on my post.

  210. +Mark Gillespie you forgot to mention +Charles Arthur +The Guardian – the scribes in chief of the Apple religion.

  211. Sarah Jane says:

    Samsung is never broring

  212. don shafiqhe says:

    Success by hard work shanice

  213. Walter Las says:

I'm always reminded of the days when it was Apple Vs Commodore Vs Atari Vs Tandy Vs… etc, etc, etc.

  214. V Delaney says:

I thought pointing out the gimmicks of the fingerprint id and Siri (which I rarely use on my 4s) was valid. It's called creating a market where there isn't really a need nor desire. It's like going into the store to buy what you need but running into a salesmen who tells you what you need. How else will apple sustain (and the other companies for that matter)? I mean if people actually used their cellphone to the point where it lost its functional purpose (broken, stolen, ridiculously outdated like the old nokia phones 3100) mobile companies would be in trouble. But we, as consumers, will play into the hands of what we call capitalism…not because we always choose to but because we're told (and maybe brainwashed) every day, hr, minute of our lives that we need this to achieve that, to become this, to have that, etc. its a matter of opinion, i suppose. (my apologies to the author, I meant to leave a comment…not a post. 😶)

  215. Nic Strike says:

Yeah, we ran out of star trek ideas to steal

  216. taief miah says:

+Max Huijgen. I agree. when Samsung decide to put out their bending phones and Google final editions of their new glasses only then will such news become interesting

  217. Technology is always gonna get more advanced, when I got my S4 they were already talking about the note 3 and the iphone 5S/5C. That just proves that you'll never have the best technology because it always gets old.

  218. taief miah says:

We're forgetting a few things. Samsung sell more smartphones than apple. Apple live off conning journalists through doublethink (Orwell ref 🙂 ) art students, many recently discovering portable workstations are better for them and cheaper, people who know nothing about tech. Which is now starting to fail after jobs died. Bye. Bye. Apple hello Google, a few others and welcome back everyone else.

  219. Everything is getting old quick…. sigh

  220. new iPhones come out
    I just don't care.

  221. Angyl says:

WebOS was clever, even cool. Lots of its ideas live on in other products. The Pre was a cheap piece of plastic more reminiscent of the flip treo, rather than the tank treo or tungsten, competing against a rack of solid-feeling phones at the time.

I'd actually love it if the tech press actually unpacked stuff like that instead of regurgitating the press releases. Does it really take going on a "[device] diet" for a month to dig into use cases? Do reviewers not have teens and women available as well as dudebros to get a good sense of what hand and pocket size a phone's niche is?

  222. yes.I am also like apple….

  223. +Peter Rodriguez There are quite a bevy of great apps on the Apple App Store that go for free, and plenty of crapware on Google Play that will still charge you.

Don't try to refute me on that point. I've used both extensively.

Not wanting to pay for apps is a ridiculous reason to hate a platform, particularly when plenty of great free apps exist for both.

  224. All the current free apps for ios suck only reason i don't like it +Enriko Menzies

  225. Thomas Cox says:

+Wayne Radinsky does the hp still have that overheating feature that dell could never perfect?

  226. spazmik says:

Wow is this thread still going?

  227. I didn't expect this from you, because (a) many people do find them interesting, or useful, (b) if you don't care you can ignore the hype, and (c) even among those of us who follow you, I am amazed that anyone cares enough your disinterest to comment. I surprise myself on that score, I assumed all the comments indicated relevance.

  228. Apple created the "norm" so don't forget that people and not to mention they created an entire market. Without Apple where would we be with cell phones?

  229. Oladapo King says:

I'm not an ifan of apple…..iPhone sucks

  230. An article on VentureBeat is observing how current apps have problems with iOS7 and may have to be modified. Also, there will have to be 64-bit optimized versions of apps to take advantage of new hardware. And developers may require app owners to repurchase as a result. Increased fragmentation and decreased customer satisfaction. iOS7 and the 5s might just be Apple's Microsoft Vista moment.

  231. M Gauggel says:

btw not a widely reported fact but the voice of Siri on the gold iPhone is Mike The Situation.

  232. Oladapo King says:

The days of iPhone are numbered…….to expensive and they ain't coming out anything exciting. ….rather go google android.

  233. Max Huijgen says:

Now this thread shows why ordinary newspapers still cover smart phones. Traffic is guaranteed when the holy war on Apple versus Android is triggered.

(not that my post had anything to do with that war, but that seems irrelevant 😉

  234. Eli Fennell says:

+Max Huijgen Amazing how not saying anything about iPhone v. Android somehow invites the argument, isn't it?

  235. Max Huijgen says:

Argh… Just when you think this post might hit 2000 +1's the influx stops…

  236. Until we won't have same operating system on computers, phones, tablets that can be used both by average users and professionals, a decent battery and maybe a single device to replace all three doesn't worth to upgrade your gadgets. We need real progress not unimportant enhancements high priced.

  237. Max Huijgen says:

The Ubuntu Edge came close +Daniel Nicolau End of 2014 I'm sure we'll have such a device.

  238. Oladapo King says:

Daniel Nicolau I couldn't agree more…….just as long as it isn't based on Apples operating system. …..:))) they suck so bad mate…

  239. Interestingly, the Nexus 4 did well despite Google canceled its launch event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy.

  240. Oladapo King says:

iPhones r expensive stone age garbage. ..try samung s4 or HTC then we r taking phones
