Says Edward Snowden in a statement supporting 'Reset the Net'. A call for developers to secure the web and present a splash screen on June 5.
Good to see an initiative which focuses on developers and others in the tech world as the NSA couldn't have gotten such a strong handle on the web without active support from the tech community as well as sloppy standards in security.
What you can do is use security enabled software where availabe, encrypt your email and prioritize the protecting of your data.
Vote with your wallet and support companies which support high standards and protect your privacy.
Meanwhile you can support the pledge here https://www.resetthenet.org/ #Tech #Politics
to bad America does not have a great HACKER,,, to hack into the n s a and shut er down. the same with obamacares nit wits.
America has lots of great hackers- If only you knew how difficult what you're saying would be. Ignorance is bliss I suppose >.<
How does this actually work? Just take it back?

—-END PGP SIGNATURE—-this reminds me of one of my favorite sayings, simple over thought never was
TrueCrypt has bitten the dust; from what I've found so far, no one knows for sure why. Bit Locker encryption capabilities come with my Windows 7 Ultimate, but a lot of people used TrueCrypt.
Sloppy security standards indeed +Max Huijgen. And perhaps more that than any sort of tech collusion. I found this an excellent piece on the state of online security: https://medium.com/message/81e5f33a24e1
+Dean Marlett-Smith simply putting a signature under your text doesn't encrypt it, it's still in clear.
I am wondering if avoiding American websites & applications might already be more secure…
+Florian Jouanel nope. A lot of non-US sites are still routed through the US. And UK is monitoring as well.
+Tom S. sure I understand… but I assume that it then depends on the company. If they have their servers in Eg. Europe, (with the UK being the exception as the US´s little brother)… you´ll of course find companies which are routed through the US… but at least not all of them right? Or is virtually ALL web traffic monitored by the US?
I use Xquick as my search engine… with servers in the Netherlands. They specifically mention that the US cannot access search results… would be a really scary thought if even they would be monitored by the US.
+Florian Jouanel The question is how your ISP routes your traffic through Europe. Ever since Telekom (biggest network in Germany) started demanding peering fees, ISPs preferably route around that, via the UK or France and Spain.
Also, just because I have no proof that France and Spain are not monitoring as well doesn't mean they don't do that. Also, routers used by ISP might be riddled with spyware.
Do not trust your connection, doesn't matter where it runs through. Use proper end-to-end encryption with Perfect Forward Secrecy, this is safe if the client and server are both safe.
Unfortunately, HTTPS connections with PFS are a real scarcity, and the campaign above is trying to raise awareness to that. Developers and Admins have to enable these to protect their users, because they have no choice if the server doesn't offer secure SSL.
Also, encrypt your emails manually. There's loads of tutorials on how to do that.
+Tom S. thank you, very useful information… :).
+Florian Jouanel Just for more information and because I love being a smart-arse:
SSL alone means the connection is encrypted and intercepted data cannot be used. However, most SSL-ciphers use an encryption process that enables interceptors to decrypt the data later if they get hold of the keys.
Perfect Forward Secrecy is an addition to SSL which makes it impossible to decrypt the data later, even if the interceptor gets hold of the secret key. That's why it's preferable, since we know that at least NSA stores encrypted connection data in case they can get a key later.
We'll never have our Privacy until The Revolution…it's gonna take a nationwide Reset, and not just the internet. But that's a good place to start
The answer to these problems of the world is not to tackle the symptom, we should direct our effort at the root cause. The cause of all hostility, the cause behind the need to control and dominate people, is scarcity.
Directing effort at the cause will be the most efficient usage of our energy. Note this: Abundance 360 and Exponential Technologies (2014)
Technology erodes scarcity. In an ideal world Snowden would be focused powerfully on the Singularity, he would focus on powerful technology, which I know he has at least some interest in, or his former (?) girlfriend is interested in it, observe the book she is reading: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/whistleblower-edward-snowden-wanted-cia-1947081
Snowden and everyone else should be urging people to heavily invest in and support AI, nanotechnology, 3D-printing, stem cells, synbio, robotics, basic-income, which would be the most productive usage of of campaigning effort. Only very radical technology can we truly stop all oppression.
Lol
+Tom S. certainly. Since nobody here has my public key I used the signature instead in order to make my comment of my usage.
I fully agree with +Iblis Bane linked article, +Max Huijgen , what makes things worse, because of this state if disrepair due to human error prone there are a lot of unresolved bugs/issues – take HeartBleed for example, or Cupid on EAN based WiFi networks. Then there's of course the corporate/enterprise reluctance – example…. hotmail.com/outlook.com_ only allows 16 characters for passwords –why_ ? Especially after all the mass-publicity of bugs, exploits and every industrial nations' governmental surveillance programs.
Yip +Otto Normalverbraucher and not only limits Microsoft you to 16 characters, they also refuse spaces afaik. Why….
